About France

Paris ma belle ville… Yes Paris is a wonderful place, but it’s not at all representative of France! Other large cities are lovely to visit, like Lille, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Reims, Rouen… And thousands of smaller places are waiting for you!

A bit of geography...

France is a large country : 1 000 kilometers separate the flat north near Belgium from the rocky inlet of mediterranean coast in South. There is the same distance between the Alps mountains at the eastern border to the Landes forest on the Atlantic coast on the west side. Due to its geographical location, French landscapes are very varied. Along the Spanish, Italian, Swiss and German borders, the landscape is rather mountainous, while along the coast at the west, north and south part of the country, the Northern, Atlantic and Mediterranean facades offer seaside landscapes.

The metropolitan land is divided into twelve administrative regions, themselves split in geographical regions due to a difference of topography, climate, cultures and human activities. France is rich in a high diversity of landscapes that we encourage you to discover! Due to the short time of the meeting, we won’t be able to show you everything, and we don’t know ourselves all the wonderful places that you can find in France. That's the pleasure of traveling in France : you can always be surprised! Have a look at the programm we have prepared for you.

To focus on the regions we will be going through during this meeting, we will meet first in Paris, the capital city. Then we will continue our trip along the Loire, the longest river of the country. From Blois to Nantes, vineyards, royal castles from Renaissance and the Loire make a luminous landscape typical of the region. We will make a stop in Nantes, an industrial city getting involved in ecological and social struggle by converting industrial wilderness. Finally we will reach the Atlantic coast with its salt production and large sand beach, enjoying the sea and hopefully the sun!

We are really excited to be your host during these nine days and to show you all these landscapes, people and food diversity!

A la vôtre!

A word about Landscape Architecture studying in France

The first landscape architecture school in France was in Versailles, right in the Louis XIV King’s vegetable garden. This school still exists and is one of the five landscape architecture schools actually delivering the French landscape architecture diploma. The other schools are located in Lille, Blois, Bordeaux and Marseille. The school ESAJ is located in Paris and delivers a landscape gardener diploma. You will find access to their websites on the partners page.
